Open source has become so pervasive in IT there is not too many areas where there is not at least half a dozen interesting pieces of technology open source software infrastructure, development network, development tools, desktop software, and so on. I am not a part of decision making in these awards, but I have empathy for them and all the different products they need to consider.

For manageability, InfoWorld, divide the price into several categories: price of 2009 Bossie (Best of open source software), top 10 Open Source Hall of Fame and the largest open source software of all time. That enables InfoWorld editors to recognize the unique contribution of, say, Linux, but at the same time give visibility to other open source operating systems such as BSD May also be important for IT organizations to consider, even they are not on the same level of adoption as Linux or MySQL.

Hall of Fame and the largest open source software are probably things that most IT organizations are familiar and are likely to use in their organization today. (If you do not, you should consider whether there are budgetary savings instead of using these products.)

Winners of 2009 Bossie award are not as pervasive technology, but certainly worth keeping an eye on. In some cases, as BI tools, there are winners of numerous awards such as Pentaho and JasperSoft. This just goes to show that there is plenty of competition in open source, according to your needs, a product could be a better choice than the other. Or you might need both for different applications.

The point is, if you look not to some of these not-quite-the Hall of Fame-like Pentaho, JasperSoft, SugarCRM, Drupal, VirtualBox, NetBeans, or you probably should. They will not all fit in your organization, but I imagine one or two could have a significant impact.
